The philosophy of CDAS is based on the belief that people can be trained in a relatively short period of time to enter the world as a professional pharmacy technician. We also believe that the amount of on the job experience, not classroom hours, is the better teacher. Therefore, it is our purpose to equip each student with the basic skills necessary to enter the workplace and begin to gather experience.

A successful career as a pharmacy technician is dependant upon a good academic foundation, a pleasing personality and dedication to the concept of patient/customer care.

The Pharmacy Technician Training Program at CDAS is designed to provide the necessary educational background and training for graduates to become proficient in the execution of their duties and knowledgeable about the delivery of patient and customer care.

Job opportunities for trained pharmacy technicians are quite good in today’s marketplace. While no one can guarantee job placement, pharmacies and hospitals are currently facing a shortage of trained technicians.
If one examines the want ads for pharmacy technicians, virtually all jobs require experience. How can you get a job without experience and how can you get experience without a job? With our course, we believe the gap can be bridged in a minimal amount of time during convenient hours and at a reasonable cost.

Pharmacy Technician Course Syllabus:

  1. Requirements: Each student shall allow a minimum of 12 hours per week of home study to complete chapter reading assignments and workbook pages. Students are required to attend all classes consecutively without missing. Our institution highly recommends all students seek professional national certification in their field, although, it is not required by the state of Illinois .
  2. Classes 2-11 will start each day with a comprehensive examination based on textbook chapter reading assignments. Week 12 will be a final exam and practical final exam. The final written exam will be extensive, similar to the National Certification exam. Any student who scores 67% or below on any exam will need to re-exam.
  3. Students are required to read the texbook Mosby's Pharmacy Technician Priniciples & Practice, along with the workbook. Students are required to read Appendixes: Abbreviations, Top Selling Drugs, Top 30 Herbal Remedies, Math Review for Pharmacy Technicians, Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPPA), Proper Hand Care for Medical Asepsis in Pharmacy.
  4. Each student will receive Mosby's Review for the PTCB Certification Exam. Each textbook comes with additional training material contained in a CD, students are urged to take advantage of these free aids.
  5. Students are also encouraged to utilize the review questions, practice exams, electronic flash cards and other online training tools.
  6. Each student will receive a professional resume to aid them in securing employment opportunities. Each student will also receive weekly job listings for the Chicago land area.
  7. Classes will consist of both lecture and lab time.
  8. Upon completion of the course, graduating students will receive a diploma for Pharmacy Technician and professional logo pin.
  9. Students are required to wear professional clothing and white lab jackets to all classes.
  10. Tutoring is available by appointment to all students in need on non-regular class days only.

Week 1: Chapters 1-3, Workbook 1-3, History of Medicine and Pharmacy, Law and Ethics of Pharmacy, Pharmacy Settings for Technicians

Week 2: Chapters 4-6, Workbook 4-6, Conversions and Calculations Used by Pharmacy Technicians, Dosage Forms, Abbreviations, Routes of Administration, Referencing

Week 3: Chapters 7-9, Workbook 7-9, Competency, Communication, and Ethics, Prescription Processing, Over the Counter Medications and Skin Care Products

Week 4: Chapters 10-12, Workbook 10-12, Complementary Alternative Medicine, Hospital Pharmacy, Repackaging and Compounding

Week 5: Chapters 13-15, Workbook 13-15, Aseptic Technique, Pharmacy Stock and Billing, Psychopharmacology

Week 6: Chapters 16-18, Workbook 16-18, Endocrine System, Nervous System, Respiratory System

Week 7: Chapters 19-21, Workbook 19-21, Visual and Auditory Systems, Gastrointestinal System, Urinary System

Week 8: Chapters 22-24, Workbook 22-24, Cardiovascular System, Reproductive System, Antiinfectives

Week 9: Chapter 25-27, Workbook 25-27, Anti-inflammatories and Antihistamines, Vitamins and Minerals, Vaccines, Oncology Agents

Week 10: Chapters 29-30, Workbook 29-30, Microbiology, Chemistry

Week 11: Chapter 31, Workbook section 31, Pharmacy Organizations and the Future of Technicians, National Certification and Exam Review, Resumes and Employment Opportunities
